MANDELA HOUSE

Mandela House

House 8115

Vilakazi Street, Orlando West

Mandela House Museum chronicles the life of Nelson Mandela and his legacy in the fight for freedom during apartheid in South Africa.

The house was built in 1945 and in 1946, Mandela moved in. He lived in this house until his arrest and imprisonment in 1962: he was only released in 1990! In his autobiography, The Long Walk To Freedom, he stated that it was only after he had returned to House 8115 that he knew in his heart he had left prison: for it was the center point of his world, the place marked with an X in his mental geography.

In 1994 Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected president and in 1999 his house was awarded a public heritage status.
